Do you really want to?

Subject: Appalling conditions for Horses in Sabah, Malaysia
To: spca@streamyx.com

Dear Sirs,

I was recently on holiday in Sabah and was shocked to see the dreadful condition that the horses were in at my resort. I complained and wastold the horses were hired from a local ranch - I visited the ranchand was disgusted at what I saw.
I complained to the hotel, NexusResorts, the local Turf Club, the Tourism office and a local vet. All seemed very well aware of the situation and I 'heard' that nothingcould be done as these horses were owned by the local mayor or somesuch political figure.
I then detailed the horrific conditions toWSPA in the UK who said that after contacting your group, you too saidthat 'nothing can be done'. They also said I was not the first tosend them appalling stories of this very ranch.
Why can nothing bedone? Malaysian legislation quite clearly states that this type of cruelty, deprivation of food and water, is punishable. If it is truly the case that even international organisations will not act when a 'political' figure is involved, what hope do we have to uphold any legislation that protects animals or even people?
I am not naive and understand that it is difficult for local people to stand up against oppressive political situations, but your group is not local - you are part of a well known, large and very active international organisation that strives to specifically protect animals. You must attempt to do something about these poor horses.
Over 70 horses are kept at Melinsung Ranch near Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. I attach some pictures of the dreadful conditions they are kept in. No food apart from poor grazing when they are allowed out, no access to water.
Horses held in barbed wire protected stalls toprevent escape. Dead horses lie for days before being dumped on anearby PUBLIC beach - not even buried - simply left to rot with all the disease and health risks this incurs.
No matter what can/won't/will/should be done to the horse owner, the remaining horses must not be left to die.
Please do something.

Chris

The Endurance and Polo Club, centre of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. The ranch is called Melinsung. It is located 20 minutes south of Kota Kinabalu

I find it unbelievable that the above complex is part of the Tourism promotion of Malaysia. How can the Minister for Tourism sanction such a facitlity which has been allowed to become a place of misery and death over years - not days, week or months but years.

As an Australian and also a Arabian lover and owner this disgusts me where a trading country of Australia can allow inhumane activity such as this the owner may have been a high profile political person but that should not allow the government of Malaysia to allow and sanction (by having this place associated with the Tourism of the country).

I call upon the Minister for Tourism and Trade and well as all government officials to get criminal action on abusers of animals.

I will also be calling on Australian Politicians to work on our Animal Welfare and get it in place in such a way as it become a criminal act to abuse , neglect and apply any acts of cruelty.

Regards

Jill

This has left me feeling quite ill. To see these beautiful creatures treated like this. I will sign a petition also. Malaysia should be ashamed that this is being allowed to happen. I hope my countrymen decide to seriously rethink competing at the 2008 World Endurance Champs because of this. Not a good look for Malaysian endurance or for endurance in general, particularly the comments made that this is "a normal condition for endurance horses to be in"... Disgusting. I also hope that my fellow New Zealanders and Australians who read this realise that these are highly likely to be Aussie/NZ horses. Please be warned ...do not sell horses to Malaysia or to any endurance dealer from your own country until you are sure you know they will not end up at this place....Lou, New Zealand

Sick evil bastards. I linked to this on my blog. I hope we can all put enough political pressure on Malaysia to get some action taken.

Absolutely disgusted. These were finely bred arabs purchased for high sums from studs, notably in Australia. I reiterate as below...make sure you know the homes your horses are going to prior to selling them. Dont be blinded by greed as $$ offered can be substantial.
Another sign of our throw-away society. Makes me sick.
I too will be lobbying...poor babies.
